At the Translation Studies Department a meeting of “SvitLingva” was held.
Lecturer of the Translation Studies Department Ternievska Ye. held a regular meeting of the educational and methodological center “SvitLingva,” which was attended by srudents of 1-4 courses of the Faculty of Foreign Languages and lecturers of the department.
The meeting was held under the title “What is English for” Міцний горішок”?,” during which students got acquainted with the peculiarities of the translation of film titles and tried their own strength in this.
Since today cinema is one of the main components of mass culture, and films create a unique model of life, the chosen theme is so popular. The popularity of the film is often determined by its title, and conveys its plot. Most of the films in the Ukrainian box office are American film studios, so the translation is carried out from English. Thus, the translation of the title of the film is a complex and responsible task facing each translator, because he must be able to transform the title, take into account the genre of the film and focus on the target audience to ensure adequate perception.
For practical translation of film titles, the most popular films and animated films known to everyone were used. For example Fast and Furious, I feel pretty, Last Christmas, The Untouchables, Two is a Family and others.
At the end of the meeting, the nuts were still split and during lively discussions they chose the best translation options. Students also learned new words and phrases.
