On May 23, Volodymyr Proshkin – Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor of the Department of Mathematics and Physics of the Borys Grinchenko Kyiv University gave an open lecture “Formation of Pupils’ Mathematical Literacy (comparison with the results of the PISA 2018 research)”.

The event was opened with an opening speech by the Director of the Educational and Research Institute of Physics, Mathematics and Information Technologies, Ph.D., Associate Professor Hennadii Mohylnyi and the Head of the Department of Algebra and System Analysis, Ph.D. n., Professor Yurii Zhuchok. Modern mathematical education is designed to raise a literate and competent person, able to realize his/her potential in industrial and creative activities in adult life. Formation of mathematical literacy is one of the means of realizing this goal of school education. It is well known that mathematics has wide opportunities for the development of a person’s logical thinking, the ability to model situations, and the mathematical apparatus is used both in the study of other school disciplines and for solving problems in various fields of science, economics and production. That is why it is extremely important that in the process of learning mathematics at school, attention is paid to the formation of the mathematical culture of pupils and the development of their mathematical literacy. After the lecture, a lively discussion took place, students and teachers of the Department of Algebra and System Analysis joined the active conversation.

Many thanks to Professor Volodymyr Proshkin for a very relevant, interesting and meaningful lecture! We also thank all the participants of the meeting and wish them every success in the future!
