Forum “Education of the Luhansk Region: Recovery and Reintegration”

On June 8, the head of the Academic Council, Vitalii Kurylo, and the Rector, Olena Karaman, took part in the forum “Education of the Luhansk Region: Recovery and Reintegration”.

The event took place in the city of Kyiv as part of the Swiss-Ukrainian DECIDE project “Decentralization for the Development of Democratic Education”, which is aimed at supporting education reforms and decentralization processes for development in Ukraine. The purpose of the DECIDE project is to help residents of territorial communities participate in democratic governance and gain equal access to quality education.

DECIDE is implemented by the NGO DOCCU in partnership with the Pedagogical University of Zurich (PHZH) with the support of Switzerland, represented by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).

During the event, the Strategy for the Restoration and Development of Luhansk Region Education for the period 2023-2027 was presented, aimed at overcoming the consequences of the Russian Federation’s full-scale war against Ukraine and the temporary occupation of certain districts of Luhansk Region since 2014. The strategy includes anti-crisis goals for the period of martial law and anti-crisis goals after the de-occupation of the region.

Vitalii Kurylo and Olena Karaman took part in the discussion of the following topics: “Challenges of the restoration of the de-occupied territories”, “Peculiarities of the organization of the educational process in the de-occupied territories”, “The rights of children to quality and affordable education in the conditions of war”, and also presented their own vision of the processes of de-occupation, reintegration, post-war recovery and further development of the educational system of the Luhansk region.

The participants of the forum were: Serhii Babak, Chairman of the Committee of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on Education, Science and Innovation; Oleksandra Azarkhina, Deputy Minister of Community Development, Territories and Infrastructure, Andrii Stashkiv, Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine, Artem Lysogor, Head of the Luhansk Regional State Administration , Roman Hryshchuk, People’s Deputy of Ukraine, Larisa Bilozir, People’s Deputy of Ukraine, Natalia Pipa, People’s Deputy of Ukraine; heads of military administrations and education departments of settlements, directors and rectors of educational institutions of various levels in Luhansk region.

The leaders of the districts and communities of the Luhansk region expressed their interest in cooperation with Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University on the training and retraining of teaching staff for educational institutions of various levels for the post-war reconstruction of the Luhansk region.

Vitalii Kurylo and Olena Karaman thanked the organizers for the first large-scale event for educators of the Luhansk region and the presented Strategy, which will be the impetus for real steps on the path of de-occupation, reintegration, post-war recovery and further development of the Luhansk region.
