XII Algebra Olympiad dedicated to the memory of Professor V. M. Usenko

The Department of Algebra and System Analysis held a traditional student Algebra Olympiad dedicated to the memory of Professor V. M. Usenko.

On April 21, within the framework of the Science Days, the ER IPMIT hosted the Algebra Olympiad dedicated to the memory of the outstanding Ukrainian algebraist, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor Vitalii Mykhailovych Usenko.

The scientist worked at our university in the period 2001–2006 and made a significant contribution to the development of algebra in the Luhansk region and Ukraine as a whole. In particular, on the initiative of Professor V.M. Usenko and with the support of the university management, a postgraduate course in mathematics was opened and the world-famous mathematical journal “Algebra and Discrete Mathematics” was organized, which has been included in the Scopus international scientometric database since 2012, as well as in the Emerging Sources Citation Index database since 2016 (Web of Science). By the way, last year the journal “Algebra and Discrete Mathematics” celebrated its 20th anniversary, and a week ago a one-time defense in mathematics was held by the postgraduate (http://luguniv.edu.ua/?p=98182).

At the beginning of the event, the participants were greeted by the Vice-Rector for Scientific and Pedagogical Work, Ph.D., Professor Anatolii Zhuchok and the Head of the Department of Algebra and System Analysis, Ph.D., Professor Yurii Zhuchok. Students and master’s students of the Institute of Physics, Mathematics and Information Technologies were invited to participate in the Olympiad. Olympiad participants got one task as a warm-up and five main tasks, which were related to the classical sections of general algebra, number theory, graph theory, semigroup theory, and demonoid theory.

The winner of the Olympiad was Yevhen Kuriachyi, a second-year student majoring in “Secondary Education (Mathematics. Physics)”. Alona Tselukhina, a 3rd-year student majoring in “Secondary Education (Mathematics. Physics)” took the second place.

The first-year students majoring in “Secondary Education (Mathematics. Physics)” Andrii Zinchenko and Olena Tetereshchenko took the third place.

We thank all the participants, congratulate the winners and wish everyone further success in mathematics!
