Within the framework of the EU Project “Intensification of Influence of Teachers of Luhansk Region on the Process of Reconciliation and Peace-Buidling”, an intensive workshop on spoken English with the involvement of a native speaker was held at the university.
On December 22, 2022, an intensive workshop on spoken English was held at the Faculty of Foreign Languages as part of a faculty-wide methodical seminar for the teaching staff of the faculty’s departments and the practical part of the implementation of the Ukrainian Leaders Development Program (ULDP) grant programme.
Speakers of the event were Vice Dean in charge of Social and Humanitarian Affairs, lecturer of the Translation Studies Department, head of the Council of Young Scientists and Students Olha Korinska and coordinator of marketing and public relations of English Language Programs, a program of the US State Department, Mr. Nicholas Gordon.
One of the tasks of the meeting was to acquaint the lecturers of the faculty and students with the interactive learning platform Nearpod, the methods of conducting the online Scavenger Hunt activity in modern conditions and establishing cooperation with a facilitator from the USA.
The class was dedicated to the upcoming New Year’s holidays, divided into two practical parts: conversational, led by Mr. Gordon, and interactive, prepared by Ms. Korinska.
Mr. Nicholas once again highly appreciated the level of training of the course lecturer, as well as the quality of the material that was presented for studying the topic of the class, especially in terms of the knowledge gained at the workshops that were held in the period from August to September within the framework of the grant programme Ukrainian Leaders Development Program (ULDP ) with the support of The Citizen Diplomacy Action Fund, financial support of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and in partnership with Global Ties U.S.
Since international activity is an important component of the work of the Translation Studies Department and the faculty of foreign languages in general, lecturers use every opportunity to exchange experience with colleagues and hold classes with native speakers. Therefore, thanks to the fruitful cooperation of Olha Korinska and Mr. Nicholas, conversation clubs with native speakers are already being planned for the next academic semester for students of the Faculty of Foreign Languages.
The students’ feedback proved that the practicum was a great opportunity to get an unforgettable experience of communicating with a native speaker and gaining new knowledge. In addition, Svitlana Yesakova, head of the department of translation theory and practice, prepared a presentation dedicated to the celebration of Christmas in Ukraine, which was sent to our guest as a pre-Christmas gift.
We wish Olha Olehivna inspiration and creativity in conducting the next online classes with colleagues from the USA.
